Kemer is a holiday resort on the Mediterranean Sea 40 kilometers or 25 miles to the south of Antalya, Turkey. In the early 80's Kemer was a small village with orange groves, but after roads were built by the Turkish government to open up tourism along the south-coast of Turkey it began to grow. Over 20 years later it has become the holiday resort it is today catering to tourists from northern Europe seeking warmth, sunshine and relaxation. Since that time Kemer has dredged a harbor and built a Marina which draws sailors from all over the world. The original families of citrus farmers sold off most of their lands for what they must of thought at the time was a small fortune. Little did they know what was to transpire over the next couple of decades. But, there were a few that held on and when the resort hotels started arriving they went from being poor villagers to multi-millionaires.
The same is true of other coastal villages south of Kemer like Camyuva, Tekirova, Cirali and Beycik in the mountains overlooking the Three Islands as the tourism developed along the south-coast of Turkey. Nowadays Kemer has little left of the orange orchards that covered the landscape as the price of land skyrocketed. Today the residents of Kemer make their livlihood from the millions of European tourists who fly into Antalya Airport to visit not only Kemer, but to enjoy the outrageous scenery of Göynük Canyon and Beycik, the beaches in Çamyuva, Çıralı, Tekirova and see the history of Phaselis.
